Best Safety Tips for Your Outdoor Adventures This Summer

Young Girl on a Slip n SlideAlthough summer is a time for fun and exciting activities, it’s important to remain safe while enjoying the sun and fresh air. Nothing can stop a fun outdoor adventure quicker than an accident or injury. So, whether you’re going camping, bicycling your favorite routes, climbing in the mountains, or simply going to the beach or pool this summer, here are some safety recommendations to keep you safe on every outdoor trip in Weatherford!

Apply (and Reapply) Sunscreen

Protecting oneself from the sun’s harmful UV rays is one of the best methods to enjoy any outdoor activity safely. Sunburn and skin damage can be avoided by using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply sunscreen to your entire body, including your neck, face, ears, and scalp, with cream sunscreen rather than a spray.

If you’re exercising or swimming, make sure you reapply sunscreen every two hours. Sunscreen is only effective for a limited time, therefore it is essential to reapply it throughout the day to ensure continued protection.

Wear Protective Clothing

Wearing protective clothing is also a good strategy to keep oneself safe from the sun. Pants, long-sleeved shirts, as well as hats and sunglasses, can help protect the skin from the sun. Wearing a wetsuit or a rash guard while in the water can also help protect your skin from the sun’s rays.

Stay Hydrated

It’s important to remain hydrated, especially in summer because it gets hot and sunny. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and have a water bottle with you at all times so you can get a drink whenever you want. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks as they will make dehydration worse.

Bring sports drinks to replace your electrolytes if you’re going trekking or doing any other intense activity. Be sure to consume significantly more water than usual if you are spending time in a desert or at a high altitude.

Avoid Peak Hours

Avoiding being outside during peak hours is one of the best strategies to avoid dangerous UV radiation. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., the sun’s beams are brightest. If possible, schedule your outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon/evening, when the sun will be at minimal intensity. This will keep you cooler and protect you from overexposure to the sun.

Know Your Limits – and Come Prepared

When you’re outside, it’s crucial to know your limitations. Start with shorter treks if you’re not used to hiking in the heat and work your way up. If you’re new to camping, start with vehicle camping before attempting backpacking.

Additionally, you should be conscious of your physical limitations. If you have a medical condition that makes being in the heat or cold difficult, take precautions to keep yourself safe and comfortable.

Finally, brush up on your first aid skills and be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. It is always preferable to be safe than sorry! When you go outside, make sure you have basic first-aid supplies on hand, such as cold packs, burn spray, aloe vera gel, bandages, itch cream, and pain medicines.

Watch Out for Wildlife

It’s critical to be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for animals when you’re outside. If you are hiking in the mountains or the forests, you should be aware of the local wildlife and how to avoid them.

There are some creatures that are more dangerous than others, such as bears and mountain lions. However, if you’re not attentive, even small animals might be a danger. For instance, snakes and spiders can be found in a variety of outdoor situations; therefore, it is necessary to know how to avoid them and what to do if they bite.

Always Tell Someone Where You’re Going – and When You’ll Be Back

It’s critical to let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll return if you go on an outdoor trip. This is especially crucial if you will be traveling alone or in a rural area.

Someone must know where you are if something happens and you require assistance. Leave a precise schedule with a friend or family member before leaving, even if you’re only going to the local swimming pool.

Follow these safety recommendations this summer to enjoy all of your favorite outdoor activities while staying safe from the sun and heat. So go outside and take in the fresh air!
